Introducing the Founder: My Story

Hey, I’m Sharifa, Founder of The 6th Borough.

Let’s be real, moving is hard. Moving to a whole new country? That’s a masterclass in bravery, patience, and figuring out that now you have to hang your clothes to dry… and air conditioning? Not standard. Wild, right?

I’m a proud New Yorker who traded bagels for biscuits when I moved to London in 2020. I had never been to the UK before, didn’t know anyone here, and arrived during the height of the pandemic while going through grief. Fun combo, right?

Even though I was chasing a dream of living and working abroad, the reality hit hard. I tried apps, mutual connections, and meetups, but nothing really stuck. I found myself constantly thinking, “Where are my people?” And honestly, I still feel that way sometimes.

So, I created The 6th Borough, not just to find my people, but to help others find theirs too.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

1️. You’re not alone. So many expats are out here trying to find their community.
2️. Americans naturally gravitate toward each other. It’s comforting to connect with people who “get it.”
3️. Making friends as an adult is hard. Period.
4️. Consistency and intention matter. Real community takes effort, but it’s worth it.
5️. Connection doesn’t just happen; it has to be created.

The 6th Borough is a space where expats can gather, laugh, explore, and feel seen. Come join us! Bring your story, your accent, your curiosity, and let’s build something real, one connection at a time.
